Safety Guidelines for Fixed Route Buses

Safety begins with you! Help us ensure that all fixed route bus passengers have a safe and comfortable experience by following the guidelines below.

Before Boarding

  • Arrive Early: Be at the bus stop a few minutes before the scheduled time to avoid rushing.
  • Wait Safely: Stand back from the curb or edge of the platform while waiting for the bus. Stay in designated waiting areas if available.
  • Look and Listen: Pay attention when the bus approaches and make sure it’s the correct one for your route.

While Boarding

  • Board Quickly and Safely: Enter the bus in an orderly manner, using the front door. Allow passengers to depart before you board.
  • Use Handrails: Hold onto handrails or poles for stability as you enter or navigate through the bus.
  • Keep Clear of Doors: Avoid standing in the doorways or blocking the aisles to ensure that others can board and depart safely. Stay behind the yellow line near the front of the bus.
  • Always watch and listen. For the deployment of the ramp, it may be opening or closing.

During the Ride

  • Stay Seated: If seats are available, sit down for a smoother ride. If standing, hold onto the handrails or poles.
  • Be Mindful of Your Belongings: Keep personal items close and avoid placing them in aisles or blocking exits.
  • Keep Noise Down: Use headphones for personal audio and keep conversations at a reasonable volume to avoid disturbing other passengers.

Crime Prevention Tips

Remember to play your part- Successful crime prevention programs all have one thing in common — active awareness. Safeguard yourself and others by following the rules and protecting yourself from crimes of opportunity.

See something, say something. Safety is everyone’s responsibility.

Although Palm Tran and public safety agencies strive to provide all citizens
with a safe and secure environment, you can take precautions whenever you
are in a public location to protect yourself from criminal activity.

  • Be aware of your surroundings and those around you. It is easy to tune everything out while on your phone or listening to music. This is a prime opportunity for criminals to take advantage of the situation. Victims and witnesses are not able to assist in identification because they do not know their surroundings.
  • Keep valuable items out of sight. Most crimes are based on opportunity. By keeping valuable items out of sight, including cell phones and laptops, you make it harder for criminals to quickly grab whatever they see and run off with it.
  • Keep your personal items under your control at all times. Items such as purses, packages, and briefcases set down even for just a second are easy targets for a snatch-and-run. This will also ensure you don’t forget your items. Items left behind could be considered
suspicious. Palm Tran is not responsible for the theft, loss or damage of personal property.
